Does anyone know of a place in the area that will take gemstones and make them into jewelry? I have recently acquired a pair of pearls, and need to find someone to make them into earrings for me. Of course, I don't want them just to be made into studs, so I actually need a designer...

There's a beading store on University Drive, just past the Caltrain station - I can't remember the name, but they're super nice, and they often have middling-to-expert beaders hanging around the store. They also sell jewelry books, so you can either talk one of employees (or the people hanging out in the store) into designing something, or you can flip through the books, find your own design, and commission it.

My friend Nikki Bates is a jewelry designer. I have no idea if she does custom pieces based on gems you have, but I could ask. nikkibates.com I own a lot of her pieces, and I absolutely love them. The website is a little pink and flowery, but her style has a really broad range. She is, however, pretty pricey, but I'm not sure how expensive she is if you provide your own gems.
