First, and most importantly: Happy birthday, Nodya!

It's an interesting feeling sitting in my kitchen and typing on a computer that isn't my work laptop. I've now lived in my apartment for just over two years, and I'm finally getting around to getting a computer that 1) I can print from; and 2) I can install non-open source things on. I should probably get around to putting speakers on this thing at some point, but they're currently attached to my work laptop and playing the soundtrack to Buena Vista Social Club.

In other news, I hate this keyboard. Almost with a passion, but that might be pushing it a little. The keys are kind of stiff, and much harder to hit than laptop keys. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Windows and Norton are flashing tons of little windows up at me telling me that my updates are completely out of date and what do you think you're DOING, young lady? Don't you know there are hackers out there just waiting to get their hands on your computer and quickly, you should protect EVERYTHING right this VERY INSTANT or you'll get no pudding. Okay, okay, I'll restart...

...ah, yes, much better. I have an actual wallpaper and everything now.

I'm getting a little better with my cable management as well -- I have a wireless router, which means that I can get rid of the ridiculously orange ethernet cable I had earlier, and now the only cables that are running across my apartment floor are the power cable for my laptop and router (I needed a 3 prong outlet, and the only one that exists in the apartment is in the kitchen) and the ethernet for my desktop (which, given that I don't have a wireless ethernet card, may just have to stay that way. Plus, wireless on a desktop tends to break more often). Anyway, what this means is that people who have laptops can just sort of show up and get internet in my house. This is kind of cool.

I am, however, having a few issues with the placement of all of this stuff. I mean, my computer is in the kitchen. On the kitchen table. Which means that it's rather difficult to have a "nice dinner" in my apartment. Of course, if I got a desk, I'd have no place to put it. Clearly, this calls for getting a new apartment. Or something, anyway. Oh, well, we make the best of it that we can.

In additional other news, I made lentil soup yesterday. One giant pot of lentil soup. It was lentilriffic, although I really should have listened to my instincts and added more carrots and maybe some potatoes. I think I might be able to remedy this, though, since I can cook some more carrots and some potatoes and then add the lentil soup after the veggies are slightly cooked. Considering my freezer is full of left over lentil soup, I will have plenty of time to practice.

I'm making orange peel chicken for lunch today, and feeding someone else with it. This is kind of terrifying, given that I've never made orange peel chicken before IN MY LIFE, and I'm kind of making up the recipe as I go. But, see the lentil story -- apparently my instincts for cooking are good, and I shouldn't worry about it. Right? :)

So, last night, while the boys were playing some random boardgame, Sarah came over to my apartment, and we made brownies and watched "The Princess Bride." We ate the entire pan of brownies (oooh, warm brownies with milk) and had a glorious time. The rain was pouring outside, and we were curled on my couch, and it was very nice. We determined it was a better time than playing a silly old boardgame anyway. We were going to watch "Labyrinth" too, but it was allowed as how Sarah had rehearsal in the morning and we were out of things to make more brownies with anyway.

Good lord, there appears to be a lot of cooking in my current lifestyle. Something is very odd about this. Meh, I guess I'll adapt somehow.

Superbowl Sunday today. Very few people I know actually care about this, but dammit, it's the New England Patriots, and I'm all supportive of them, because, well, I'm from Massachusetts. (Ironically, when I'm in MA, I'm from California...) I'm kind of crashing Matt's apartment, so I hope he doesn't mind too much. I'll bring some Diet Coke as a bribe.... My other two options are to go up to the city and rely on someone else to give me a ride or spend two-and-a-half hours messing about with public transportation, or to go watch it by myself (and a ton of strangers) at the Old Pro in Palo Alto. I have to say going up to the city would be fun, given that I'll probably be the only Pats fan there, but the 2-5 hour roundtrip is daunting.

Hm, in addition to being slightly unhappy with my monitor, it's come to my attention that I really need another one of those wrist supports, like the one I have at work. Typing on this awful keyboard is making them hurt, but i think if I elevated them slightly, it'd feel better.

Geez, this entry turned out awfully long. ::throws up an lj-cut::
