Also, my bus driver has picked up a peculiar habit of calling me a princess.

sigh....

Calling you "a princess," or just "Princess?" Either way, seems kinda annoying. Any idea why?

WTF? That seems incredibly obnoxious.

Counter. If you are bold enough, outrageous enough, and plain and simple I-don't-really-give-a-fuck enough...counter.

Next time he asks, "How's your day, Princess?", reply with "It's going lovely, Countess, and you?" Do this one-two times, he should stop...

i mean, admittedly, he's a little old mexican man who doesn't speak the world's best english and reminds me somewhat of an archetypical grandfather. the suggested counter is overly rude and may be misunderstood too.

it doesn't bother me much, i just find it funny. what bothered me was the bus driver (Dennis) i had last year who engaged me in conversation so loudly and obnoxiously that the other people on the bus stared at me, and i couldn't help but think they must think that i had some weird relationship with the driver. but he got fired, probably thanks in part to various complaints. Though a lot of the reason I disliked him was that he would ask me (in his loud and booming voice) things like "So, do you have a boyfriend?" and "How's your relationship going?" but, happily, he got fired or left. or whatever.

i get the sense that the current bus driver is a very happy go-lucky person, who is also kind of lonely. and usually, the conversation is limited to (as I'm going out the door), "okay, princess, have good day" to which i respond "you as well, i'll see you tomorrow."

so no harm, really, it just sort of amused me, in that "why is it always my bus drivers?" kind of way.

Aw. That's actually kind of cute now that we have more detail. Yeah, it doesn't sound like he's trying to be lecherous and gross at all. I'm glad you're being nice to him :)

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't understand the potentially insulting connotations behind the word "princess"; it might just be something he picked up from TV as a word to call pretty girls and he thinks he's being nice.

Oh man, okay I should stop before I give him more backstory. Still, thinking about him now suddenly fills me with wonder and an innocent kind of glee.

Aw, that sounds sort of cute, and mostly quite nice! I think most people just generally have a set of friendly names to call other people, so once they decide that you seem like a nice enough person to deserve one, they'll pull one out. But various people's thresholds for that seem to be set at vastly different places. But usually you can tell if it's weird/creepy or just sort of normal nice behavior. This sounds mostly normal and nice.
