I had the weirdest dream last night. I was transferred to Google's Saudi office in Riyadh (we apparently had three of them: Riyadh, Jeddah, and an undisclosed location somewhere deep in the Ruub al-Khali (called "GeoGulf" and located on some interesting ruins)). I said that I couldn't go, women can't work in Saudi; one of my coworkers Erica condescendingly told me that Saudi Arabia had changed its cultural laws so that women could now work there. So of course, I applied, and was accepted along with 2 guys, who were going to be in the Jeddah and GeoGulf offices. So, being the only woman in the group, I had to prove that I belonged in the Riyadh office, so I ate a raw lizard. Then, I decided that I was going to go see the old Masmak fortress in Riyadh, and on the way (this is a dream, remember), we passed through the GeoGulf and saw the odd archeology there. Lunch was acquiring a shawarma al-dajaaj, and eating it while running through the streets of Riyadh to get to the office.
And woke up going, damn, I miss the desert. And, yes, I checked. We don't yet have offices in Saudi Arabia. And the Egyptian office requires dual fluency in Arabic and English.
I'm really not entirely sure where the dream came from - there were some overtones from various conversations I'd had last night, but nothing overt.
