I definitely hear the bit about leaving and returning in the dark, which is rather irksome to me as well. And my car always seems to have fogged up every morning, which is annoying.
As for the book, perhaps the best way to do it would be to have the speakers in the book cover as suggested, and just have an id for each bit to play that can be entered quickly and easily when you get to that page. A bit primitive, perhaps, but easy.
