In honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mvs9ctCen2E

In other news, I got pwned at pool last night. It was awesome, since I was actually playing okay, so it was a good challenge. He threw the last game, though, and let me win. Either that, or he was coming off of a caffeine high and I was coming onto a sugar high.

It worries me that some people have said that I'm a total basket case. I know I'm a little spastic, but I didn't think that I was this bad. I used to be all quiet and serious.

I'm so tired, it's only Wednesday, and I'm going up to the city tonight to see Air in concert. Should be a good time, although I don't know how much sleep I'll acquire.

There will be a computer in my apartment soon. It will be amusing, since, um, where the hell am I going to put it?

Today, I was glad to discover a couple of things:

1) No matter how much time you spend talking to people or trying to understand them, inevitably you will be surprised by them. In some cases, more than once.

2) There are still people in the world who believe very strongly in the success and brilliance of love, and who are not necessarily jaded by whatever situations they might have been in before you knew them or after you lost them.

Both of these things makes me quite happy, even though I'm not sure that I fall into either category. It's just good to know that things like Truth, Love & Beauty still exist as ideals and that people are very different on an individual basis.

In completely unrelated news, I had an awesome dinner at Kaygetsu, which consisted of 6 courses of unidentifiable foods and fantastic tastes and much green tea. I had spent a good few hours stressing about what I was going to wear, how/whether to do my hair, how/whether to put on makeup, and other things, before watching a couple episodes of season four of Buffy (yes, I have seen all of it more than once but I'm rewatching it) and forgetting to be stressed until about 10 minutes before I had to leave. Thank goodness for skillz which allow me to get ready and look good within 10-15 minutes.

I also realized, after some conversation, that I'm vaguely addicted to my Livejournal and that I tend to write in it more than is good for me. Of course, this isn't actually reflected in my entries, given that I spend a lot of time thinking about what I'm going to write, deciding how much information I want to divulge, and then writing whatever part of it I feel like I can write, sometimes expounding further in a friends-locked post. (Though, as you may have noticed, I don't like friends-locked posts much.) Usually, I get the urge to post something 2 or 3 times a day, but generally restrain myself to posting once every 2 or 3 days.

Henry is safe in Texas -- I know this because I called him and he picked up. I thought, for whatever reason, that he was two hours behind (so calling him at midnight my time wouldn't be so late for him), but, as it turns out, he's two hours ahead. And now much less well-rested. Sorry, Henry.

I have also added large amounts of things to my Amazon wishlist. And I kind of wonder when I think I'll be able to afford the complete Star Trek seasons of the original series, the Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine, as well as the whole set of movies. In the meanwhile, I kind of also need to get Buffy 5-7 and Angel 3-5. It's a pity that my birthday is so close to Christmas. Although I don't get any fewer presents, I only get them once a year...

I also kind of want to go and buy an entire new wardrobe, with shoes and everything. I've recently had an increasing urge to become more girly. I don't think this will actually happen, although I should probably go buy another pair of flat shoes (maybe puma SpeedCats or more ballet flats) and maybe a pair of peeptoe pumps.

I have at least two snails in my tank. One of them is named Sparky. I think the other is Trouble, both in name and in actuality. Apparently, snails are hermaphroditic, so can produce without a mate. And apparently, they do this often enough to take over the tank. I have experience with this, actually, since I found one snail in the morning, and twelve hours later, there were two of them. Coincidence? I think not. I have to figure out what to do about them, although the internet tells me that most snails are generally beneficial to the tank.

Finally, I realized that it was the last week in July, which means that Summer is nearly 2/3 over. This is both sad (end of summer) and good (beginning of pumpkin pie and a return of Christmas music). Also, at the end of September, my parents will have been married for exactly 40 years. My dad wants to go watch a large quantity of P-51 Mustangs take to the air in Ohio, but I'm not sure we'll be able to all make it out there for that. And it's no fun without all of us.

As part of summer going away, Formula 1 season is also drawing to a close, with Louis Hamilton, the rookie, in the lead for the Championship. Will Kimi, Alonso, or Massa be able to steal his early lead? Only time (and the remaining races) will tell.

If this were the normal size of my LJ braindumps, would you really want to read two or three of them every day? Yeah, I wouldn't, either.

This weekend:

Friday night: I don't remember Friday night - something must have happened. Maybe I went out to dinner?

Saturday: There was DnD. It was ridiculously sunny, and I didn't yell at my players. I also didn't plan enough, but c'est la vie. Next week, it will be better. :)

Sunday: There was some sun. And lunch with library people, and then coffee with a real live date. I have the feeling that he thinks it went better than it did, but I couldn't say for sure whether it went as badly as I presume it did.

Monday: I went to Sunnyvale for lunch at DishDash and had the chicken shawarma and kibbeh. Food was good. Then there was hanging out, and then dinner, and more hanging out.

today, i am happy about: going into boston and seeing paul. paul is awesome. we had pho for lunch, from the same chain as is in Mountain View, Pho Hoa. It was bizarre because the boston version is much nicer and less hole-in-the-wall-sketchy. the food wasn't as good, which just goes to prove the point that if you want good pho, go to a sketchy hole-in-the-wall in California. however, he is coming out to california in January to attend a random conference from the tenth through the fifteenth.

today, i am less happy about: long bus rides, lack of money, and generally frustrated at life's current path for me.

today, i wish that: he would move. but, c'est la vie. i also need to make a christmas list....

...Happy Valentine's Day
Every day the 14th!
I don't think y'all heard me!
I just wanna say Happy Valentine's Day!
Every day the 14th!
Can y'all dig that?
Now when arrows don't penetrate, see
Cupid grabs the pistol (Uh, yeah, now, now lookie here!)
And he shoots straight for your heart
And when he won't miss you!...

...Cupid hath pulled back his sweetheart's bow
To cast divine arrows into her soul
To grab her attention swift and quick
Or morrow the marrow of her bones be thick
With turpentine kisses and mistaken blows...

Two very different songs, both with a reasonable outlook on Valentine's day.

I think I wish I were somewhere or someone else. But I got a rose bush and I'll have dinner tonight.

So, mafi mushkila, we move onwards.

here it is, a blast from the past, tips for Valentine's day from long ago:

it's that time of year again; the time of year that taken males and single females hate. that's right, it's almost valentine's day. Well, not for another whole week, but when you walk through the grocery store and are immediately greated by giant red/pink/white displays of chocolate, roses, etc...how can you not stop and think to yourself, "god, this is worse than christmas"? remember, guys, there are worse days to show your affection for a romantically attractive human. like the day of their grandmother's funeral.

-if you give a girl roses, do not give her eleven. she will wonder where the other one went.
-stuffed animals that scream "love me tender" are not cute. no matter what.
-check that she even likes chocolate before splurging on a box of godiva. you *were* going to splurge, weren't you?
-learn to differentiate between 'coral' and 'pink' roses and 'red' and 'dark red' roses. pink is not acceptable under any circumstances, and red is only partially acceptable (due to the cliches surrounding it). if you think red roses are too forward, try traditional white.
-flowers other than roses are okay, with the exception of carnations, since carnations are considered the cheap imitation of roses. unless she *likes* carnations.
-giving a girl clothing is not a good idea under all but the tiniest of circumstances. don't risk getting killed. gift cards are more acceptable but still carry massive risks.
-dinner is a cliched but decent idea; make reservations weeks in advance, since everyone will have your same brilliant idea.
-sweet handwritten notes are fabulous...unless they're stalkerish scary
-good surprises are good...
-extravagant gifts are generally bad...don't spend more than your college tuition.
-in our fantasy world, guys sing songs to the girl; this is not a viable option unless other people think your voice is decent. if so, selections such as "lady luck" "fly me to the moon" and other sinatra favorites are generally good. stuff like "closer" by nin is not a good idea. think soul singers.
-stubble burn SUCKS. consider shaving right before you see your girl. if you don't, it's very possible you may only get a half-hearted peck on the cheek for all your efforts...and that would just be a shame.
-flowers should only be bought "just because." don't try to sell yourself, she won't buy it.
-avoid commercialism altogether...just make your gifts and get everything right. make sure you start weeks in advance.

and now, the phrase of the day, brought to you by brach's sweethearts: "kiss me"

narnia was good. i didnt' think there were huge holes (like, what did the carnivores eat?), but then again, being a theater/fantasy person, i tend to be able to suspend disbelief if the story is good enough. and this one was classic.

and, dude, mr tumnus was really sexy. ;)

best of luck to everyone on finals.

tonite, i get to go shoot pool and have dinner with a coworker who reminds me terribly of the infamous robert. this should prove...interesting, if nothing else. i also brought my *favorite* tea mug (and favorite tea!) to work because drinking non-Lady Grey out of paper cups just wasn't doing it for me.

oooh....barracuda!
